If you are trying to figure out how to get a cape in Minecraft Java, the short answer is that there is no cape store. Official capes come from limited-time promotions, a few account-history rewards, and one free cape that every player already owns.

Most capes from past promotions cannot be earned anymore. A few can right now. This guide covers both, shows how to equip a cape in the launcher, and explains why an OptiFine or Lunar cape is a different thing.

Details were checked in October 2026. Promotions move fast, so confirm dates before you plan around one.

The short version

Every Java player has the Pan Cape. It is free and automatic.
New capes arrive through promotions: livestream watch quests, Bedrock event servers, in-person events, and game tie-ins.
When a promotion ends, its cape is no longer available to new players.
Capes belong to one account. You cannot move a cape to a different account.

How to get a cape in Minecraft Java right now

At the time of writing, these official capes can still be earned:

Pan Cape. Given to every player by default. It has been on Java since May 8, 2025, including for people who buy the game later. There can be a short delay after a new purchase before it appears.

Aurora Cape. A Minecraft Dungeons II launch promotion. Watch a rewards-enabled Dungeons II livestream for at least 3 minutes on TikTok or 15 minutes on Twitch through October 14, 2026 (Pacific time). You receive a code to redeem at minecraft.net/redeem by October 31, 2026. Minecraft.net says supplies are limited, and the Minecraft Wiki reports that Twitch had run out of codes by October 2, so do not count on it.

Hero Cape. Play Minecraft Dungeons, then log into Minecraft Dungeons II before December 31, 2026. Once the cape unlocks there, log into Java or Bedrock with the same Microsoft account. This route requires both games.

Minecraft Experience capes. The ticketed, in-person Minecraft Experience events give each guest a cape code after the visit: the Minecraft Experience Cape for Villager Rescue and the Moonlight Trail Cape for Moonlight Trail. They run in specific cities for limited periods, so check the official site for current locations.

The Twisted Cape, a Dungeons II pre-order bonus, is already gone.

How promotional capes reach your Java profile

Most new capes are granted to your Microsoft account, not to one edition. According to Minecraft Help, a cape you earn or redeem first shows up in the Bedrock Edition Dressing Room, and you activate it for Java by signing into Bedrock:

Redeem your code at minecraft.net/redeem, or wait for the notice that the cape was granted.
Open Bedrock Edition with the same Microsoft account and find the cape in the Dressing Room.
Close Bedrock, then equip the cape in the Java launcher.

Not every cape needs this. The Pan Cape, for example, shows up on Java without opening Bedrock.

Redeem codes on the account you actually want the cape on. There is no supported way to move it later.

How to equip a cape in Java Edition

The Minecraft Help Center steps:

Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition.
Go to the Skins tab.
Hover over the skin you use (or create or duplicate one) and select ....
Select Edit, choose your cape, and click Save & Use.
Restart the game if the cape does not appear right away.

Every public Java cape and whether you can still get it

This covers official capes regular players could earn. Mojang staff capes, personal capes, and volunteer capes (such as translator capes) were never public, so they are left out.

Once a promotion is over, its cape cannot be earned again, and capes cannot be moved between accounts. That is why caped accounts in our shop are sold as whole accounts, never as cape transfers. Be careful with anyone selling leftover codes from an ended promotion. Recent promotion terms, including the Aurora Cape's, say codes are non-transferable, and Microsoft reserves the right to remove items redeemed through fraud or abuse.

OptiFine, Lunar, and other mod capes

Mod and client capes are not official Minecraft capes. The Minecraft Wiki notes that they are only visible to other users of the same mod.

OptiFine: donating gets you the OptiFine cape, which OptiFine says is visible to everyone using OptiFine 1.1 B or newer.
Lunar Client: its store sells cloak cosmetics described as visible to other Lunar Client users.

Players on the vanilla launcher or a different client will not see those. Also skip any "free cape mod" sent through a Discord DM or video description. That is a common disguise for account-stealing malware, covered in Minecraft session hijacking and token stealers.

Bedrock capes are a separate system

On Bedrock, capes live in the Capes section of the Character Creator. Some Marketplace skin packs include skins with capes attached, but those capes are locked to that skin and are not Java capes.

Since the editions were bundled together in 2022, capes released to the public have come to both editions, unlocking on each when you use the same Microsoft account. FAQ

Can you buy a cape in Minecraft Java?

Not directly. Mojang does not sell capes on their own. Some promotions have been tied to purchases, such as the Twisted Cape (a Dungeons II pre-order bonus) and the Hero Cape (which requires both Dungeons games).

Can I move a cape to another account?

No. Capes cannot be transferred between accounts.

Why does my new cape not show up in Java?

Check that you redeemed it on the same Microsoft account you use for Java, open Bedrock once so the cape is claimed, then restart the launcher. Some challenge rewards also arrive after the challenge ends. The Copper and Zombie Horse cape challenges, for example, allowed up to 30 days for delivery.

Will the Migrator or Vanilla cape come back?

Both depended on account history that can no longer be created. Migration closed on September 19, 2023, and the Vanilla cape went to accounts that owned both editions on PC before June 6, 2022.
