Yearn Cape: the A Minecraft Movie Cape Explained

Screenshot: A Minecraft Movie Live Event (minecraft.net)
The Yearn cape is one of three official capes released to promote A Minecraft Movie, and the only one of the three you had to play for. The other two came from watching streams. The Yearn cape was the final reward of a Bedrock event server in spring 2025, and it has not been obtainable since that server closed on April 14, 2025.
What the Yearn cape looks like
The Minecraft Wiki describes the design as the mine entrance from the film, with rails leading inside, and the back of the cape shows the view out from within the mine. Minecraft.net called it "stunning art of a mineshaft inspired by Steve's longing for the mines." The name nods to Steve's line about "yearning for the mines" in the trailer, which became a meme before the film opened in US theaters on April 4, 2025.
The elytra version shows the movie's Steve, played by Jack Black.
The A Minecraft Movie Live Event
The cape came from the A Minecraft Movie Live Event, a Bedrock Edition server set in the film's Midport Village. Per the official announcement, it opened on March 25, 2025 at 2:30pm PT and closed on April 14, 2025 at 2pm PT. The Minecraft Wiki notes it was first set to close on April 7 and was extended by a week. You needed Bedrock 1.21.70 or later, plus an online subscription on consoles.
There were three mini-games: mining ores with Henry, escorting supply carts with Natalie and Dawn, and defending the village walls against piglins with Garrett.
The six quests
Minecraft.net's announcement mentions five challenges in its opening paragraph and six further down. The six-quest count matches what the event actually did. Per the Minecraft Wiki, a new quest unlocked every other day, and the last one required finishing the other five first:
| Quest | Task | Reward |
| ------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------ | ------------------ |
| 1. Defend the Village! | Deliver 5 carts, retrieve 100 ores, and defend 5 waves | Boots of Swiftness |
| 2. Ghasts Incoming! | Kill 20 ghasts at the Outer Walls | Battle Cry emote |
| 3. Farm Mobs, Not Crops! | Kill 200 enemies in any mini-game | Mushroom Hat |
| 4. Protect the Cart! | Deliver 3 carts with at least 40% health | Kadoosh! emote |
| 5. Low on Iron! | Defend 5 waves with at least two iron golems left | Jet Pack |
| 6. Mine Diamonds! | Finish quests 1–5 and retrieve 60 diamonds | Yearn cape |
The sixth quest went live on April 4, 2025, the same day the film opened in the US. Everything before it gave Bedrock Character Creator items. Only the cape carried over to Java.
Yearn vs Home vs Menace
The three movie capes were released together, use similar art, and share the same elytra design, so they get mixed up. They were obtained in completely different ways:
| Cape | Design (per Minecraft Wiki) | How it was obtained | Deadline |
| ------ | ---------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------- |
| Yearn | Mine entrance with rails | Finish all six quests on the live event server | April 14, 2025 |
| Home | Earth portal over grass, bright blue backdrop | Watch a Minecraft creator on Twitch for 3 minutes, then redeem a code | April 6, 2025 |
| Menace | Obsidian Gateway against a red Nether backdrop | Watch a Minecraft creator on TikTok for 3 minutes, then redeem a code | April 6, 2025 |
Two practical points come out of this. First, since all three elytra show the same Steve artwork, an elytra screenshot does not tell you which cape an account has. Look at the cape itself. Second, Home and Menace came from redemption codes, while Yearn was granted directly to the account that finished the quests. There was never a Yearn code, so anyone offering one is not selling a real product.
NameMC's cape list gives a rough sense of scale. At the time of writing it shows about 177,000 profiles with Yearn, compared with about 274,000 for Home and 433,000 for Menace. NameMC only counts profiles it has seen, so these are not totals, but the ratio fits the extra work Yearn required. For how it compares with older capes, see Rare Minecraft Capes in 2026.
How the Yearn cape reached Java
The event was Bedrock-only, but the reward was not. Minecraft.net said the cape would be available in Bedrock and Java Edition "provided you use the same account for both games," and that players could claim it once the event was over. The cape is tied to the Microsoft account and then appears in the Java launcher's cape list. For launcher steps, see how to get a cape in Minecraft Java.
Can you still get the Yearn cape?
No. The server closed on April 14, 2025, and we found no announcement of a re-run. Capes also cannot be moved between accounts, so the only way to have the Yearn cape now is an account that already has it.
How to verify a Yearn cape
Check it yourself on the account once you have access. A seller's screenshot does not count.
- Java launcher. Open the Skins tab, edit a skin, and look at the cape list. That list shows the capes the account owns. Equip Yearn and save.
- In game. Join a world, switch to third person, and check that the cape shows the mine entrance with rails. Do not rely on the elytra, which looks the same for all three movie capes.
- NameMC. Search the username. NameMC shows the capes it has recorded for that profile, and its Yearn page lists known holders. Treat it as a cross-check, not proof. It can lag behind, and it tells you nothing about who controls the account.
If you are checking before you buy, ask for a live screen share of the launcher's cape list rather than an image.
Buying an account with the Yearn cape
The cape belongs to the account, so access matters more than the cosmetic.
- Get full access. With an MFA account you control the Microsoft account itself, including the email and security settings. Anyone who can still recover the account can take the cape with it. The MFA account guide explains the difference.
- Lock it down right away. Change the password, review the security info, and remove anything you do not recognize. The steps are in how to secure a Minecraft account after buying.
- Know what it is. The Yearn cape is a cosmetic. It does nothing for gameplay. Its supply is fixed, but it is far more common than the old MINECON capes.
If you want one, our caped accounts include Yearn cape listings, at $10.99 at the time of writing. Whatever you buy, run the launcher check above once you have the account.
FAQ
Is the Yearn cape the same as the Home cape?
No. Both were movie promotions with the same Steve elytra design, but Home shows the Earth portal on a blue background and came from watching Twitch. Yearn shows the mine entrance and came from the live event quests.
Did you need Bedrock to get the Yearn cape?
Yes. The event server was only on Bedrock Edition. The cape then also appeared on Java for players who used the same Microsoft account for both editions.
Can I redeem a Yearn cape code?
No such code exists. Minecraft.net said the cape would appear on the account once the challenges were done. The codes from that promotion were for Home and Menace, with an April 6, 2025 deadline.
